Wenchang Bridge was one of the landmark buildings in Fuzhou. It was built in the early years of Qiandao period of the Southern Song Dynasty and was once named Tongji Bridge. Originally being a wooden structure, it was later changed to a floating one, and then a stone beam bridge during the Jiatai period of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the second year of Baoqing period, the local gentry renamed it as Wenchang Bridge because it was said that Wenchang was the corresponding constellation of Fujun. Around the years of the Liberation War of China, it was successively renamed as Xingyi Bridge and Liberation Bridge. The name of Wenchang Bridge was restored in 1983.
