Fuzhou was the place where the Baiyue race lived in ancient times, and then became the jurisdiction of Wu, Yue, and Chu successively in Warrior States Period. Its political organization was gradually established after the Western Han Dynasty. Nancheng County, the first county of Fuzhou, was established in 201 BC, which was also the earliest county jurisdiction in Fuzhou. Linru County was established in the northwest of Nancheng County in AD 96, named for the intersection of the Lin River and the Ru River within the territory. In AD 257, Linchuan County was established and governed by Linru County. In AD 589, the central government replaced County with State and changed the name of Linchuan County to Fuzhou.
